Spotlight: Dr. Clyde C. Wilson, Jr.
We’re delighted to spotlight Clyde, who is an associate vice president at Oklahoma State University and currently serves as a 1050 Forward Fellow. In addition to Clyde’s many accomplishments, he’s also a talented creative writer and amazed us all with stunning poetry during a recent Fellowship writing exercise. Read below as Clyde shares answers to our spotlight questions —- an, of course, adds a poem too!
Share a short anecdote or story about why you think service to your community is important:
In high school, one of my greatest inspirations was the Women’s Basketball Coach. When I entered high school, the team was mired in an 87-game losing streak. Coach Arrington, despite facing a tight budget and minimal resources, never gave up. His relentless efforts transformed our program into one of the most inspiring in the state, ultimately leading to a State Championship a few years after I graduated. He found creative ways to raise funds for equipment, jerseys, and travel, making the game accessible and engaging for his players. His work ethic and determination taught us that with hard work and resourcefulness, we could overcome any obstacle.
This experience showed me the profound impact that dedicated service can have on a community. Just as Coach Arrington turned challenges into triumphs and inspired hope, I aim to bring that same spirit to my work. I believe that by applying my work ethic and determination, I can influence and uplift my community, demonstrating that even small efforts can lead to significant positive change.
In your role as a parent, educator, public servant or community leader, how have you modeled civic engagement?
As a parent, modeling civic engagement to my 3rd-grade son and 6th-grade daughter has been an intentional and ongoing process, especially considering the unique experiences and challenges they may face as a young Black boy and girl in school. I’ve focused on showing him the importance of being informed, involved, and empowered within our community.
One way I’ve modeled civic engagement is by actively participating in local events and discussions that impact our community. Whether it’s attending town hall meetings, volunteering for community service projects, or participating in school board meetings, I make it a point to include them in these activities when appropriate. This allows them to see firsthand how our voices can contribute to positive change and how we can work together to improve our surroundings.
I’ve also made it a priority to educate them about the history of civil rights and the importance of voting, for example. We talk about the struggles and triumphs of those who fought for the rights we enjoy today, and I explain how every vote and voice matters. On the last Election Day, for example, I took them with me to the polling station, explaining the process and why it’s important for us to participate in it.
What’s a favorite hobby?
Watching college football!
What’s a favorite thing to do with family or friends?
As a father, eating dinner with my family every night is incredibly important. This daily ritual provides us with a consistent opportunity to connect, communicate, and strengthen our bond. In a world where distractions and busy schedules can pull us in different directions, sitting down together for a meal allows us to pause and focus on what truly matters—each other.
For me, it’s not just about the food; it’s about the conversations that happen around the table. We share our highs and lows, discuss what’s going on in the world, and support each other through challenges. This time together helps build a strong foundation for my children, giving them a sense of stability and security. It also reinforces the value of family and the importance of being present for one another.
As a father, I’m particularly mindful of the need to create a nurturing environment where my children feel heard, valued, and loved. Eating dinner together every night is one way I ensure that they know they are my priority and that our family is a team that will always support each other.
What's a big take away from your time as a 1050 Forward Fellow? What ''aha moment" have you had so far?
A significant takeaway from my time as a 1050 Forward Fellow has been the recognition of the power of collaboration in driving systemic change. The fellowship has highlighted how bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise can lead to innovative solutions that address some of the most pressing challenges in our community. It’s reinforced the importance of breaking down silos and working across disciplines to create more inclusive and effective strategies to improve the overall quality of life.
College football is here! Who are you cheering for?
As college football kicks off, I’m cheering for the University of Colorado! Watching the excitement in my eight-year-old son’s eyes as we follow his team together has been incredible. Football is more than just a sport for us; it’s a way to connect and teach valuable life lessons to one another. I use different aspects of the game to influence his daily experiences, helping him understand the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and collaboration. Just like in football, where every position is crucial to the outcome, I remind my son that in life, each person has a role to play, and being accountable to one another is key to success. It’s a great way to bond and instill these important values.
Where's your favorite place to eat in your community? What do you always order?
My favorite place to eat in the community is "Just Wafflin’." Every time I go, I always order the Waffle Breakfast. Just Wafflin’ is a cozy and warm breakfast spot that feels like a comforting embrace from the moment you walk in. The ambiance invites you to linger and savor each moment, whether you’re dining with family, friends, colleagues, or guests who come to visit.
Do you see yourself as urban, rural or somewhere in the middle?
In the middle.
What advice would you have for future Fellows?
Although I don’t recall the exact title of the exercise, it involved using descriptive words to portray our hometown. To provide some advice, please review my poem, and you’ll see how my guidance for a future 1050 Forward Fellow will become clearer.
Poem:
In Stillwater, where America’s brightest orange gleams,
Where pioneers of public education chase their dreams,
The Student Farm’s fields stretch far and wide,
Where innovation blooms and futures collide.
The Stillwater Medical Center stands strong and true,
A beacon of care in skies of vivid blue,
The airport's hum brings faraway hopes near,
In this town where hearts and minds steer.
With 100 visits in 100 days so bold,
Stories of progress and community unfold,
Stillwater’s essence, a tapestry of grace,
Shows how dreams and actions find their place.
As you embark on your journey as a 1050 Forward Fellow, let the character of your hometown be a wellspring of inspiration. Just as Stillwater, OK, with its vibrant orange pride, dedication to public education, and commitment to innovation, shapes its community, your own home holds the key to your impactful endeavors.
